The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This
Whenever a major honors show nears, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored that year
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
