This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like conventional body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
